Doctor Dead After Crashing Into Tour Bus Headed for Golden Triangle

CHIANG RAI –  A doctor from Chiang Mai has been killed after colliding head on with a tour bus in Chiang Province Sunday. The accident occurred in Wiang Subdistrict, Chiang Saen District.

Dr. Sathon Cheanpanich, 55, a physician at Chiang Mai Ram Hospital was killed when he collided head on with a bus full of Chinese tourist. The tour bus passenger were shaken up but none were severely injured.

When police arrived at the scene they found a smashed BMW SUV on the side of the road with the dead doctor inside. The tourist bus was blocking the main road while the Chinese tourists were sitting on the roadside.

The driver of the tour bus said he was heading up the hill when the BMW crossed lanes and struck the bus head on.

The tour bus was carrying visitors from China and Malaysia to the Golden Triangle in Chiang Saen. Some of the passengers were shaken up but none were severely injured.

Dr. Sathon’s body was taken to to Chiang Saen Hospital while police contacted his relatives.

Last month, a pickup truck crashed truck head on into a bus load of Chinese tourists in Chiang Rai.

According to Police, the driver was dead at the scene while injured tourists were rushed to hospital.

The tour bus was carrying 19 Chinese passengers, 15 adults and 3 children. One tourist suffered a fracture left shoulder while others suffered minor injuries.

The tour bus, carrying 19 Chinese tourists was heading to the White Temple of Chiang Rai.

The Chinese Consulate General has sent officials to visit those injured after learning about the accident.
